What Thread Do You Need for a Needlepoint Canvas?

There are many ways to calculate the the amount of thread you need but really one tried and true method that tends to be used over and over. 

Once you have your canvas picked out you are going to take a tape measure and measure the design area of the canvas. If you are shopping online, look for the "design area" dimensions in the product description. *Trigger warning, the following steps do require basic math. 

For example: This canvas is a 9.25 in x 7.25 in canvas. So 9 x 7 = 67.06 square inches. NOW, each thread will tell you how much area it covers per skein. For this example, I am using Silk & Ivory and it is estimated to cover 28 square inches. So I will need at least 3 skeins for the background.
